Oxford, Cambridge experts share insights on urban renewal at Gubei Community

The Cambridge University Shanghai Alumni Association and the Gubei Civic Center invited elites from Oxford and Cambridge to bring international leading urban renewal concepts and strategies on Sunday to help plan for the new life of Gubei International Community.
In 1986, Hongqiao became one of the first economic and technological development zones in China. In order to match the commercial functions of Hongqiao, Gubei International Community was formed, becoming the earliest region in Shanghai where foreigners lived in clusters.
In recent years, the Hongqiao Subdistrict grasped the opportunities of urban renewal and made effective exploration and attempts in improving housing conditions, enhancing the quality and vitality of the blocks, and improving residents' quality of life.
Not only have numerous old communities been restored, but a batch of landmark buildings such as Huangjincheng Avenue and Gubei Vanke Plaza have also been renewed and upgraded.
In 2024, the state government proposed to accelerate the urban renewal. How to inject new vitality through technology for urban renewal?
At the event, alumni from Oxford and Cambridge engaged in work related to urban renewal respectively focused on green low-carbon life, CityWalk and intangible cultural heritages to share outstanding practices of urban renewal both domestically and internationally, as well as explore potential cooperation opportunities and projects with an international perspective and cutting-edge theories.
