Located at 1660 Hongqiao Road, Liu Haisu Art Museum is a modern national art museum with its plaque name written in the handwriting style of Jiang Zemin, the former Chairman of PRC. Since its opening in 1995, Liu Haisu Art Museum is one of the few first-rate art museums named after a person, whether in terms of investment, occupied area, decoration and infrastructure. With renowned reputation in the field of art earned by his art achievements, Liu Haisu was one of the initiators of China’s New Art Campaign and one of the founders of the first art school “Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy” in China.

With a reasonable layout and fine decoration, the 5-storey art museum occupies an area of more than 3,600 square meters. As soon as you arrive at the museum, you will find a bright and broad lobby with a height of 12 meters on the first floor, flanked by an exhibition hall, a gallery and a lounge room on both sides. Further inside is a grand exhibition hall of 450 square meters. As there are no pillars in the exhibition hall, it provides an ideal place for the display and exhibition of art works in various forms. On the second floor, there are two exhibition rooms, inside of which is a gallery assembled with large glass pieces, showcasing relics, calligraphies and paintings. A painting storage and a small library can be found on the third floor.

This year, Liu Haisu Art Museum will start to be moved from 1660 Hongqiao Road to its new home at the intersection of West Yan’an Road and Kaixuan Road, with a total area of 12,540 square meters including the exhibition hall, the storage of collected pieces of art works, the multifunctional hall, the academic report hall, public service infrastructures and some other affiliated rooms, thus boasting a multiple of functions including a art gallery, a museum and a memorial hall. The new site is planned to open on March 16, 2015, the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Liu Haisu Art Museum. Before that, it will temporarily settle at the HongQiao Yunfeng Hotel at the opposite of its present site.
