Shanghai Oil Painting & Sculpture Institute is the first professional institute in PRC dedicated to creation and research of oil paintings and statuary. The “May 30th Movement Monument” on the People’s Square in Shanghai is the collaborated work of the teachers and students of the Shanghai Oil Painting & Sculpture Institute.
As an exhibition platform for the Shanghai Oil Painting & Sculpture Institute, the Shanghai Oil Painting & Sculpture Institute Art Museum, designed as if a hard stone whose surfaces whittled into several polygons, sits near Jinzhu Road. With its cleanly cut, angulated design in simple and sturdy style, the art museum itself is nonetheless a piece of artistic sculpture after its reconstruction from a painting gallery in the 1990s.
Unlike many other art museums, the Shanghai Oil Painting & Sculpture Institute Art Museum is quite roomy and light and fresh in interior decorative colors, thus forming a strong contrast with the substantial exterior walls. The delicate design of the interior walls visually effectuates their surface as thin as pieces of paper. Accompanied by the quiet music, visitors will find themselves lapsing into deep contemplation and hours seems to slow down its pace in elapsing.
