From tension to tranquility: Yuan Kan's evolution as an artist

2024/10/16

"Hearing the Silence: Yuan Kan's Solo Exhibition" recently opened at the SPSI Art Museum, featuring the latest representative works from the past two years by renowned contemporary artist Yuan Kan.

About 35 pieces (or sets) are on display, including paintings, sculptures, installations and videos, all of which are Yuan's new works from the past two years.

Yuan's creations have always been deeply rooted in the expression of personal emotions and experiences. With an artist's sensitivity and contemplation, he captures and reflects changes in himself and the surrounding world.

The works in this exhibition show a shift from the tension and unease present in his earlier pieces to a sense of tranquility and introspection. This transformation marks a significant breakthrough in Yuan's artistic exploration, indicating a greater focus on inner emotions and the spiritual world.

In terms of form, Yuan has moved away from familiar concrete imagery, opting for abstract language in his paintings and substantial abstract metal sculptures. The interplay between sculpture and painting creates a scene that is outwardly calm but teeming with underlying currents. Yuan refers to this scene as a "secret garden," a refuge for his soul and a true expression of his hidden emotions.

The exhibition is open to the public for free and will run until October 29.

Address: 111 Jinzhu Road, SPSI Art Museum
