Innovative hybrid operating room enhances patient care at Tongren Hospital

The hybrid operating room at Shanghai Tongren Hospital was officially put into use recently. On the same day, the 150th cardiac and major vascular surgery was successfully completed in this operating room.
The hybrid operating room at Tongren Hospital is equipped with large-scale digital medical imaging equipment, allowing for simultaneous imaging diagnosis, interventional treatment, and surgical procedures.
This setup enables major surgeries, which would typically require different operating rooms and stages, to be completed in one area at once. This eliminates the need for patients to be transferred multiple times between the interventional catheterization lab and the surgical operating room, thereby avoiding risks such as hypoxia and instability of vital signs during transfers.
The operating room is equipped with a hundred-level laminar flow purification system, the Siemens Artis Pheno platform, and a Maquet all-carbon interventional surgical table, primarily used for cardiac, vascular, and neurological surgeries.
“We can benefit from the imaging capabilities of the hybrid operating room for repairing diseased heart valves, treating arrhythmias, and performing aortic aneurysm surgeries. Cardiac hybrid surgery is a common treatment method for these conditions,” explained Zang Wangfu, director of the Department of Cardiac and Major Vascular Surgery at Tongren Hospital.
Additionally, the hybrid operating room can also be used for neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, and bronchoscopy procedures.
