The Nike Grind basketball court, jointly built by LIVAT Shanghai and NIKE, is an eye-catching attraction, which has taken a new approach to showcase and implement the circular economy.
The Nike Grind basketball court is located next to the No.3 entrance of the LIVAT Shanghai, and the entire court is enveloped in a dreamy cherry blossom pink, instantly filling you with dopamine and athletic energy. Quite beyond the imagination, the entire court is made from recycled sneakers!
As a representative of Shanghai's community circular economy, the basketball court, relying on Nike's "Move to Zero" project, transforms recycled sports shoes into eco-friendly rubber granules through multiple processes such as crushing, disinfection, and reshaping, ultimately creating this sports field where you can freely sweat it out.
It's also a core component of the upgraded Livat Garden in the mall, which integrates cherry blossom groves, treehouse playgrounds, summer fountains, and rest areas, resembling a high-quality "urban natural living room" where citizens can exercise, stroll, relax, and engage in parent-child activities.
The eye-catching venue also attracted many residents from the neighboring communities. "I had only heard about old shoe recycling in the news before. I never thought that I could play on a court made of old sports shoes. While my child is playing, I can also teach him about environmental protection. This experience is so special," said Mr Chen, who lives in the Beixinjing Subdistrict.
Upholding the concept of "benefiting humanity and the planet", LIVAT Shanghai and Nike reached an environmental strategic cooperation agreement in 2025. After a year of preparation, the basketball court officially opened to the public in May 2026. It is not just a sports field, but also a practice of the shopping mall fulfilling its social responsibility and contributing to the construction of a green and low-carbon city in Shanghai. It also highly aligns with Changning’s direction of multi-format coordinated development of ‘culture, commerce, tourism, sports, exhibition, and greenery.
At Livat Shanghai, green and low-carbon details are evident in every corner of the mall. Users can accumulate green energy by donating old shoes, using green transportation, and participating in the exchange of unwanted items through the "Livat Green Energy" mini-program, which can then be redeemed for exclusive benefits.
The mall has also brought together circular economy-themed stores and second hand platforms Xianyu and Aihuishou, and partnered with merchants deeply committed to sustainable development, such as IKEA and Decathlon, to form a green business alliance, encouraging more brands to adopt green practices.
From pairs of retired sneakers to a vibrant public basketball court, the once "invisible recycling chain" has now been transformed into a tangible, accessible urban sports space. Environmental protection has moved from an abstract concept to a part of the public's daily lives and exercise routines.
